New Years Eve at Lake Winnipesaukee- Wolfeboro, NH

This past New Years Eve we chose to avoid the big bar crowds.  Instead, we opted for a mini-getaway in New Hampshire to ring in the new year and also spend some time outdoors. We booked a hotel in Tilton, NH which is around a two hour drive outside of Boston and located nearby both Wolfeboro, NH and Gunstock Ski Resort.  For the evening of NYE, we purchased tickets in advance ($15 each) for First Night Wolfeboro, which included admission to the events and entertainment taking place in town.

Wolfeboro is situated alongside Lake Winnipesaukee.  As to be expected, there are several restaurants and shops located on the lakefront of the Wolfeboro Harbor.  The panoramic views of the lake with the New Hampshire mountain ranges in the distance are breathtaking, especially during sunset. On a clear day, Mount Major you can easily be seen across the way. After enjoying the sunset while walking along the harbor, we stopped in at Garwoods Restaurant, one of Wolfeboro's lakefront properties.  Not only does Garwoods have an excellent food and drink selection, the restaurant also has large pane glass windows overlooking the lake, making your meal and experience even more enjoyable.

When we visit new places, we try to immerse ourselves among the locals and learn more about the town's character.  Partaking in some of the events as part of Fist Night Wolfeboro, was the perfect opportunity to do just that.  We met Brian Stockman, a sculptor that typically works with wood, yet carved a stallion from a 300 lb block of ice.  There was a live animal presentation with Derek Small, owner and director of Wildlife Encounters. We also had the opportunity to exchange stories over dinner with some of the members in the Lakes Region Chordsmen group before their performance later that evening.

Later that evening we watched the fireworks show from the balconies of Jo Greens Upper Deck billiards bar, a really fun spot on Wolfeboro's lakefront.  The fireworks display over the harbor was terrific.  To cap the evening we headed back towards our hotel's location in Tilton to Onions Pub for the final countdown of 2014. There was live music, good food and drinks and a fun, upbeat atmosphere.  We could not have picked a better spot to end such a great New Year's Eve celebration in New Hampshire.
